Enabling challenged athletes to experience the thrill of athletic competition

Founded in the fall of 2007, Athletes Serving Athletes (A.S.A) is a direct services, non profit organization that offers free running and triathlon programs to challenged athletes.  Challenged is a broad term. All of our programs are targeted to two distinct populations:

1) Youth living with physical disabilities:

These athletes otherwise would most likely not have the opportunity to compete in a running or triathlon event.  (Including but not limited to athletes living with; paralysis caused by spinal cord and other injuries, diseases and birth conditions, stroke, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and amyotrophic lateral scleroses (ALS).

We use custom racing equipment and match the challenged athlete with an able bodied runner or triathlete. They compete as a team. To date we have worked with athletes from The William S. Baer School, Maryland School for the Blind, Kennedy Krieger, YL Capernaum and are currently approaching other organizations in the Greater Baltimore Region.

2) At risk youth:

Since the fall of 2009, A.S.A has been offering free running programs to at risk youth living in the foster care system. These athletes are able bodied physically, but dealing with difficult, life challenges and adversity.  A.S.A offers our programs to athletes from Arrow Child and Family Ministries and The Children’s Guild.

A.S.A's metric of success is defined by how many challenged athletes we enable to "cross a finish line". To date A.S.A has enabled over 185 athletes to train, compete and cross a finish line. These programs are offered at no cost to the athletes, families or organizations that support them.

On average A.S.A.’s athletes compete in 15 different running/triathlon events per year. The majority of racing takes place around the greater Baltimore region however we do race in lower Pennsylvania and on Maryland's Eastern Shore.  A.S.A. does intend on expanding our programs and services into surrounding areas.

Two of the races our athletes compete in are Athletes Serving Athletes sponsored events:
