Athlete with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to Compete in

CTA’s Inaugural “Celebration Sprint Triathlon” - June 27, 2010

 

Columbia, MD – Columbia Triathlon Association (CTA), a 501(c)-(3) Corporation, announces its inaugural Celebration Sprint Triathlon which will take place on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Centennial Park in Columbia, Maryland.  Almost 2,000 participants will compete in the race, which includes a .62-mile swim in Centennial Lake, 17.5-mile bike, and 3.4-mile run.

One of the participants, Shane Lauer, a 19-year old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, will be competing with the assistance of David Slomkowski, founder of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA). Shane will be pulled in a raft for the swim, seated in a custom-made bike for the ride, and pushed in a custom racing jogger for the run.  Shane will be competing alongside 20 other non-disabled athletes from ASA’s first ever racing team. ASA, a non-profit organization based in Baltimore, was established in 2006 and offers programs and services to physically, socially and economically challenged individuals in the mid-Atlantic region.  “Our mission is to inspire and prepare challenged athletes to compete in running, triathlon and cycling events, and allow them to feel the thrill of competitive sports,” said Slomkowski. “If they have the will, we’ll find a way!”  For more on ASA, visit www.athletesservingathletes.org or email info@athletesservingathletes.org

Baltimore Marathon Oct 11th 2008

Athlete Born with Cerebral Palsy to compete in the Under Armour 2008 Baltimore Marathon

James Banks from Baltimore City will compete in the 2008 FULL Baltimore Marathon.  James will compete in the event with a volunteer runner from the Athletes Serving Athletes racing team.  James will join 15,000 other competitors in the baltimore running event hosted by Corrigan Sports of Elkridge Maryland.  James is a student athlete from The William S. Baer School in Baltimore City (www.thebaerschool.org).  James will be pushed in a custom racing jogger that has been modified to meet his special needs.

James will be competing alongside other members from the 2008 Athletes Serving Athletes racing team (Team ASA) that is sponsored by Citi/Smith Barney (Munson Team Hunt Valley) and Shara Hine, independant consultant for Arbonne International.

Physically challenged athlete to compete in Harrisburg Triathlon

Harrisburg, PA, Sunday August 10th 2008.  James Banks of The William S. Baer school in Baltimore City will compete in the Harrisburg Triathlon.  James will compete with the assistance of a volunteer from the Athletes Serving Athletes triathlon racing team.  James will join hundreds of athletes in the .8 mile swim, 14 mile bike, and a 3 mile run sponsered by NAI CIR Commercial Real Estate services and Harrisburg's YMCA.  James will be pulled in a raft during the swim, towed in a bike carrier for the bike portion, and pushed in a racing jogger to cross the finish line.  Racing equipment has been customized to accomodate James' special needs due to his cerebral palsy.  James will be competing alongside 10 other athletes (non-disabled) from the Athletes Serving Athletes triathlon team sponsored by Citi/Smith Barney of Baltimore, Shara Hine Independent Consultant for Arbonne International, and The Towsontowne Rotary Club.

Athletes Serving Athletes is a non profit organization that provides the opportunity for challenged athletes to experience the thrill of competition and to show the public in general what is possible.  Based in Baltimore, Maryland, ASA is working with challenged athletes in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Blind Athlete Takes Second Place in Maryland Triathlon

Pocomoke, Maryland, Saturday, May 31, 2008
Maryland School for the Blind athlete Patrick Lewis took second place
in his age group at the 6th Annual Pocomoke Triathlon.

Competing with David Slomkowski of Cockeysville Maryland, Patrick,
aged 16, joined over 200 athletes in the .5-mile swim, a 15-mile bike
ride, and a 3.5-mile run sponsored by the Lower Shore Family YMCA in
Pocomoke.

Slomkowski pulled Patrick in a raft during the swim, towed him in a
trailer for the bike portion, and pushed him in a racing jogger to
cross the finish line in second place in the 19-and-under age group.
Racing equipment was customized to accommodate Patrick’s special
needs due to his blindness, cerebral palsy and severe mental
retardation.

Patrick and David were competitors on the Athletes Serving Athletes
triathlon team that was sponsored by Smith Barney of Baltimore and
Shara Hine, Independent Consultant for Arbonne International. The ASA
team took home four trophies.

challenged athletes to feel the thrill of competitive sports and to
