History
Inspired by the incredible story of Rick and Dick Hoyt (www.teamhoyt.com), Athletes Serving Athletes began in 2006 by volunteer athletes who wanted to use their God-given abilities to enable physically challenged students from the William S. Baer School in Baltimore City to experience the thrill of athletic competition by competing with them in local running and triathlon events.
Specifically, Athletes Serving Athletes offers programs and services to challenged athletes that focus on inspiring, training and competing with them in local running, cycling and triathlon events.
Our metric of success is defined by the quality and number of times we enable a challenged athlete to "cross the finish line".
All of our programs and services will be focused on increasing the number and quality of “finishes” we are responsible for each year. The focus of these programs will be on challenged athletes that otherwise would never have this opportunity. ASA is currently working with student athletes from The William S. Baer School, Maryland School for the Blind, Grace Church's disability ministry, and YL Capernaum.
ASA is also getting ready launch a 5k training program to 30 youths living in foster care this fall. We will administer a 6 week program that will culminate at a local 5k race.
In 2007 ASA was responsible for 3 finishes, in 2008 12 finishes, and in 2009 we "finished" with 57. Our goal is to offer these programs and services at no charge to the athletes, families and organizations we serve.
Through the leadership of a strong board of directors and hundreds of volunteers, Athletes Serving Athletes has now introduced challenged athletes outside of Baltimore City to the excitement and experience of these athletic events and is currently looking to offer its services to challenged athletes residing in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“I never realized how life-giving acting as another person’s legs could be. To experience a short period of life laughing, competing, and pushing the limits with Spencer helped me see again that one of life’s greatest treasures is the treasure of helping people go places they have never gone or may never get to go. In doing so I was taken to new places of joy and hope myself…..I can’t wait to do this again. I may have been Spencer’s legs for a race, but he is my inspiration for taking risks that make life so meaningful”.

We really admire you and appreciate all you do to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs. Your efforts not only impact the athletes you compete with but also their parents. You give someone with special needs the opportunity to know what it feels like to be like everyone else when they participate and "cross the finish line" - what a wonderful gift!
The Brooks Family
Dave, I just want to pass along how proud I was to be associated with ASA, James Banks and you yesterday. Your effort, humility and commitment to James and the ASA cause is truly inspiring. The morning in Harrisburg was just so great and my family and I thank you for helping provide the opportunity for us to be involved with James, you, the H’bg triathlon and ASA. We took a bunch of pictures and I have used this Shutterfly site as an easy way to share. Please pass this link along to all the friends of ASA that you think would enjoy.
