Athlete with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to Compete in

CTA’s Inaugural “Celebration Sprint Triathlon” - June 27, 2010

Columbia, MD – Columbia Triathlon Association (CTA), a 501(c)-(3) Corporation, announces its inaugural Celebration Sprint Triathlon which will take place on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Centennial Park in Columbia, Maryland.  Almost 2,000 participants will compete in the race, which includes a .62-mile swim in Centennial Lake, 17.5-mile bike, and 3.4-mile run.

One of the participants, Shane Lauer, a 19-year old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, will be competing with the assistance of David Slomkowski, founder of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA). Shane will be pulled in a raft for the swim, seated in a custom-made bike for the ride, and pushed in a custom racing jogger for the run.  Shane will be competing alongside 20 other non-disabled athletes from ASA’s first ever racing team. ASA, a non-profit organization based in Baltimore, was established in 2006 and offers programs and services to physically, socially and economically challenged individuals in the mid-Atlantic region.  “Our mission is to inspire and prepare challenged athletes to compete in running, triathlon and cycling events, and allow them to feel the thrill of competitive sports,” said Slomkowski. “If they have the will, we’ll find a way!”  For more on ASA, visit www.athletesservingathletes.org or email info@athletesservingathletes.org

“This is a very special sporting moment for CTA and the triathlon community,” said Robert Vigorito, President and Race Director of CTA. “It goes to show that anything IS possible, especially when we all care more about the Cause and the Mission. Triathlon is among those very special sports of inclusion, and CTA is excited to have Shane, and his “Machine” Dave Slomkowski, competing.”

CTA also directs TriColumbia LIFEFest (April), The Columbia Triathlon (May), Eagleman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon, qualifier for the Ford Ironman World Championship Kona and Foster Grant Ironman 70.3 World Championship Clearwater (June), TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon (July 25, 2010), AFLAC Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon(August 22, 2010), and the ChesapeakeMan Ultra Triathlon Endurance Festival (September 25, 2010).  For event information visit www.tricolumbia.org, or email CTA at events@tricolumbia.org.
