The WINGMAN Program is specifically designed to empower ASA athletes living with little to no mobility, but whose hearts hold the desire to race in mainstream running events, the opportunity to compete. Each of these ASA athletes is supported by his or her own unique WingMan Team.
A WingMan Team consists of an ASA athlete, 3-6 persons (WingMen), a WingMan Captain. The WingMen work together to provide the encouragement and emotional and physical support needed to help the ASA athlete experience the thrill of crossing the finish line.
Each WingMan will be placed on a team in advance of race day. In an attempt to familiarize you with the custom racing equipment, each WingMan will attend a training session. The WingMan Team will run the entire race together with their athlete, and each team member will have the opportunity to “push” the athlete.
ASA provides the athlete and his or her WingMan team with all of the equipment and resources necessary to cross the finish line, including assigning a race, working with event directors, training opportunities, and providing all race day logistics. Each WingMan will be required to pay his or her race registration and travel expenses and each Wingman will be required to attend a training session and fundraise for ASA.
Fundraising is a critical component of the WingMan experience and our WingMan Program. Each WingMan will commit to raising $300.00 through the solicitation of friends, family, and co-workers, and through other creative fundraising efforts. Your fundraising efforts make it possible for ASA to continue to offer our program and services free of charge to our athletes. We provide each WingMan with a user-friendly fundraising webpage so people can support your team with a simple click of the mouse. 100% of funds raised go directly to Athletes Serving Athletes' efforts aimed at empowering more athletes to cross the finish line..
Benefits to Athlete
Our athletes need you in order to cross the finish line. They need your support, your heart, your connection, and your athletic ability so they can experience the thrill of competition and the feeling of love, acceptance, and significance.
Benefits to WingMan
“I never realized how life-giving acting as another person’s legs could be. To experience a short period of life laughing, competing, and pushing the limits with Spencer helped me see again that one of life’s greatest treasures is the treasure of helping people go places they have never gone or may never get to go. In doing so I was taken to new places of joy and hope myself…I can’t wait to do this again. I may have been Spencer’s legs for a race, but he is my inspiration for taking risks that make life so meaningful”.
